Ants in Your Pants
Managing Big Feelings
Next class starts: Spring 2017
Registration opens: To be announced
Teacher: Andria Anderson (Occupational Therapist)
This class is for any parent who wants to learn more about how to help their child manage big feelings. You will find this class especially helpful if you are feeling a little overwhelmed by your child’s big emotions and challenging behaviours.
We’ll explore how children return to a state of calm after stressful situations (self-regulation), what might be going on behind your child’s behavior, and how to help your child manage big feelings and behaviours. We’ll provide practical strategies to use in your day-to-day to help make life easier and problem solve with you to make them work for your family.
We’ll teach you how to become a master at reading your child’s behaviours. Children communicate through behavior rather than words when they’re overwhelmed and frustrated, so we’ll help you decode and understand it.
Being able to self-regulate is the ability to be calm, organized and emotionally balanced through the day. This class will help parents understand self-regulation and what they can do to help their kids learn how to manage their big feelings and reactions. We’ll cover what parents can look for when kids are becoming dysregulated and practical strategies (for home and school) to help get them back on track.
Best of all, we’ll be available on our private forum for all your questions throughout the 4 weeks of class (plus an additional bonus week).
Parents will finish this class feeling more confident and prepared in their ability to anticipate their child’s needs and help them navigate through the day more successfully.
*Tip: Check with your insurance provider as you may qualify for private insurance coverage under Occupational Therapy services.
Week one: We’ll start with a basic understanding of self-regulation and what it means for you and your child. By having a better idea for how you self-regulate throughout your day, you’ll be better able to relate to your child and what they are experiencing.
Week two: We’ll introduce our ANTS acronym and teach you how to become a detective of your child’s behaviours.
Week three: Now that you understand what’s behind your child’s behaviours we’ll introduce our PANTS acronym and equip you with some practical strategies and help you make them work for your family’s lifestyle.
Week four: We like to call this our implementation week, where we bring everything from the past three weeks together into a practical plan for your family. On the forum we’ll help you troubleshoot through strategies and celebrate the victories.
All participation and interaction for this class will take place in a private online forum. (Registered students will receive instructions on how to access the forum a few days before class begins.) The forum is there for you to connect, learn, and share experiences with fellow parents and your teacher as often as you need and at a time that works best for you.
On the first Thursday of class, Andria will share Lesson 1 in the forum and e-mail it to every student (we like to use Thursday as our start date as it gives you the weekend to read and digest the material while it’s still fresh in your mind). She will also be available during the week to answer questions and facilitate discussions in the forum as you read and work through your lessons. Each week will follow the same pattern.
The beauty of this class and every other class at Collective Therapy is that you can read, practice, and participate throughout the week whenever it is convenient for you. This means from any timezone, anywhere you have Internet access, at any time of day. Most students spend 2-4 hours per week “in class” (this includes reading the lesson and participating in the forum).
If you have any questions please feel free to email firstname.lastname@example.org
What you’ll get out of this class:
- Access to our members-only forum. This is where the ‘aha’ moments happen as students and teachers share experiences, ask questions freely, and encourage one another.
- Weekly learning modules for you to download, print, and keep as a helpful reference
- Develop strategies that will work for your family and child’s needs (PANTS)
- Become detectives of your own child’s behaviour patterns (ANTS)
